.hack//CELL takes place at the same time as .hack//Roots. Following a beautiful Edge Punisher named Midori and her side-kick Adams the Blade Brandier, their experiences are lush and full of mystery within the popular online MMORPG called ‘The World R:2’. Midori encounters many characters from the original .hack//G.U. games, such as Haseo, The Terror of Death, Silabus, Gaspard, and of course the menace players from Kestral, Bordeaux and her lackeys.
You also follow the gripping story of Midori Shimomura, a high-school student whom is often found with her best friend, Kaho. Real-life Midori suddenly becomes stricken with an unidentified degenerative disease, which confines her to a bed in a hospital where her sickness slowly but surely takes a deathly hold on her.
Two Midori’s, one a powerful being in a virtual world, and one a helpless sickly teenager hooked up to life-saving machines, how can this be? It is later revealed that Virtual-Midori is actually a sentient PC that was created as a result of a ‘Virtual Cell’ being produced from Real-Midori. Virtual-Midori escaped into the network, where she eventually created the PC player, Midori.
