Login and Message Box Problem

Ever since the last upgrade I am having two problems on the forums. The first isn't that big of a deal, but whenever I first attempt to login I get an error message that says: "Invalid Redirect URL (http://www.dothackportal.com/forums/?)" however, when I login a second time it is always successful.

The second problem is very annoying and involves the message boxes. Whenever I type in one with a lot of text, the scroll bar automatically keeps scrolling me back up to the top of the message so that I can no longer see what I am typing. When I scroll back down to the bottom, it just zooms me right back up to the top. I've tried this on multiple computers to see if it was the individual machine causing it but it happens on all of them. For now, I'm just typing stuff up in Wordpad and pasting as a work around. If someone knows something I could do to solve this particular problem, I would appreciate it!

For the log in it sounds like there is an issue with www being in the address. I will look into it today to see if I can get it resolved.

As for the message box, do you mean chatbox, thread posts, vm's, or pm's?

The login issue has been what I was having since before the upgrade. Remember to remove the www when browsing the forum. The forum treats http://www.dothackportal.com and http://dothackportal.com as two different sites because of the cookies set by the forum. As far as I can tell, regardless of which link you use, the cookie that gets set is always for the latter.

As for the text area issue for thread posts and the PM system, I have not encountered such problems.
What browser are you using?
Try using a different browser to see if you are still having the same issue as the original browser you were using.
I am using Google Chrome 13 at the moment. I also have Firefox 6.0 (recently updated today), Safari 5 and Internet Explorer 9 installed.
You could try:

1. Restarting your browser (close/exit then re-open).
2. Clearing the data your browser is storing if it is just the one browser showing those symptoms.
3. Updating your browser (or at least check for updates)
   1. Mozilla Firefox 5.0+: Help -> About Firefox. Browser's about box should automatically check for updates and let you know if you are up-to-date or not.
   2. Internet Explorer: Use Microsoft Update. I recommend getting Internet Explorer 9 if you want to use/continue using Internet Explorer
   3. Safari: Apple Update typically takes care of this for you. The browser does not check for updates.
   4. Google Chrome: [Wrench] icon -> About Google Chrome. The about box should automatically check for updates. If you keep Google Chrome open for several days, it eventually prompts you with a green dot on the wrench icon to restart the browser typically because of updates that need to be applied. Sometimes you might get told about updates in the about box and you can apply the updates from there (also restarting the browser to apply updates).
   5. Opera Web Browser: I don't use this browser and barely used it in the past. But I'd imagine you could find it under Help -> About Opera or Help -> Check for Updates.
4. Restarting your computer
5. In extreme cases, kicking or pounding on the computer may help (or at the very least relieve any frustrations you may have).

That's just something you could do on your end to see if it gets resolved. Like I said, I don't have that issue on my end with Google Chrome. So it could just be you, or a browser incompatibility. Hope this helps.

So, I've tried and failed so far at solving the issue with www being in the address.

I have noticed however, it does successfully log me in, even though it gives that error. Next time that happens take a look at the top right of the page. Let me know if it says your log in name up there as if you are logged in. It did on mine, and I was able to just hit the banner to get to the main part of the forums, not having to log in again.

I know that isn't a complete fix, but for now I hope it is at least logging you in ><

I will continue working on this issue this week. Sorry I am not able to come out with a big fix right away, but I am giving it at least a few minutes a day :/

As long as you go directly to http://dothackportal.com/forums instead of the www address, you shouldn't run into the problem. When I do log out and log back in under the regular site, I'm not redirected to the WWW site. If you have both sites saved as a favorites, one might override the other when you initially visit the site, so check your favorites and remove the one with a "www." (yes www[dot]) prefix. Apparently that's what Chrome kept doing on me, so it might be doing the same for your web browser. If you chose for the forum to remember you when you come back to visit, this will also solve the forums "memory loss" effect, in the sense that it forgets you.

Of course, I didn't have that problem with my forum when it was visited as a folder instead of a subdomain. But I think turning the /forums/ folder into a subdomain might resolve this issue. Surely your host at least lets you have subdomains. I don't know a domain host that doesn't offer at least 5 subdomains. I suppose this could remedy the WWW problem if people were sent to a subdomain rather than visit a folder. Just guessing at it though.

Removing the Ws from my bookmark did fix the login issue completely. Thanks for the tip! Both of my web browsers are outdated. I'll update Firefox and see if that resolves the other problem, but I'm keeping IE at version eight for a while.
